Today we spent the better part of the day out at the Miraflores Locks at the Panama Canal. They have an amazing visitors’ center with exhibits and a movie presentation on the history of the canal, and a bird’s eye view of the locks. We enjoyed an delicious brunch on the balcony of the restaurant in the visitors’ center, and watched several small boats and a few HUGE ships navigate the locks. It is impossible to describe the experience of watching the passage of a ship through the locks – we had read about the canal, but seeing it in person is really something special. One cannot help but wonder how in the world people managed to build this magnificent canal system so very long ago, with only limited tools and lots of manpower. While driving around today, we also managed to miss our turns at least 4 times, saw lots of the city we hadn’t planned on, and got pretty good at backtracking and starting over again! We ended the day back at the hotel enjoying the Christmas music (again) along with libations in the lobby bar! We are having SUCH a good time!
